Temperatures are rising and we are looking forward to longer and lazier days of summer. While summer may be of some relief from cold and chilly days, it may also bring along various health problems like dehydration, upset stomach, bacterial infections, heat stroke, etc. It is imperative to make sure you are eating the right foods and exercising the right way to maintain fitness and health. Restore and replenish your skin and physical health as we suggest some quick health tips to survive the sweltering summer this year.
Here are some useful tips:
Stay hydrated – It’s so important to stay hydrated when it is hot outside! Make a habit of carrying a reusable water bottle with you throughout the day, drinking from it, and refilling it often. On super hot days, add electrolytes to your water a couple times, to replenish minerals that are lost through the sweat.
Protect yourself from the sun during the heat of the day – Especially if you are not used to being out in the sun, adjust to it slowly and protect your skin and eyes from too much sunlight – especially between 10 am and 4 pm, when the sun is at its strongest. If you are not able to stay in the shade, wear long and loose fitting clothing – natural fibers work best – they will shade your skin and allow the sweat to evaporate underneath without sticking. Wearing a wide brim hat will protect your head and neck.
Eat Light, Small, Frequent Meals – Heavy meals with large amounts of carbohydrates and fats can make the body feel hot and sluggish. Rather eat light, small, and frequent meals with lots of vegetables and fruit that are in season, to avoid discomfort and maintain good energy levels.
Snack on berries – They are in season and at their best this time of year, so eat them up! Berries are loaded with antioxidants (especially blueberries and blackberries), which can be beneficial in preventing damage to tissues and reduces the risk of age-related illnesses. They are also full of fiber (especially raspberries) – your gut bacteria will thank you for it!
Stay Active – Exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle all year round, but make sure to be kind to your body, especially during strenuous exercise in the heat! Proper hydration, replenishing electrolytes, and protecting your skin from too much sun is doubly important during training.
Take a vacation – Taking time away from your daily routine for a vacation has many benefits. A vacation can lower your blood pressure, heart rate, and reduce the stress hormone cortisol, which contributes to increased belly fat and risk of heart disease. A change in scenery can also widen your horizon, it can lead to breakthroughs in areas you might feel stuck in, or solve problems that you may be able to see from a different viewpoint.
Let these health tips invigorate you this summer! Don’t go on this journey alone, share this list with a friend and encourage each other to be your best selves while having fun outdoors!
